Frustration Boils Over In The Land of Tundra

It was another lackluster few days for the Beavers, losing to Los Cabos, but then taking the win over them against a former Beaver in Allan Landry.  But the highlight of the sim was the first game between New Orleans Looters and the Beavers at the Beaver Dam.

After SP Carlos Castillo was shelled, the Beaver bullpen took over with MacBride coming in to calm things down, only to give way to Wayne Poole.  After surrendering a solo bomb, Poole wanted to see how mentally tough these clowns are from New Orleans.  Clearly not tough at all, Poole merely tried to brush back Errol Hughes at the plate with a 95 MPH fastball, only to see Hughes lean into it.

"What the f*** is this bulls&$*!" Wayne Poole could be heard yelling to Retardo Hughes.  Hughes clearly does not enjoy having his real name uttered and so in tune went all postal on Poole.  Local TV station Inuit 10468 on Bell ExpressVu was there to capture it all.

After the game Poole stated, "I was simply brushing him back from my plate, there's a written rule in baseball to try and do everything possible to avoid being hit.  Clearly Hughes is too stupid to figure that one out.  So I attempted to pummel some sense into him."

"I do not condone any statements Wayne Poole makes, I will review his statements and determine if a fine is in order," GM Aaron Blank phoned into local media from an undisclosed location.

Moving on, the Beavers do have a few bright spots, the top 3 performers these past few days were
1B Charlie Murdock : 23 AB, 9 H, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .391 AVG, 1.130 OPS
OF Michael Jackson : 12 AB, 6 H, 0 HR, 3 RBI, .500 AVG, 1.333 OPS
OF Damien Yates : 22 AB, 7 H, 1 HR, 5 RBI, .318 AVG, .920 OPS

After Carlos Castillos shelling, it has been determined he will be moved back down to AAA to get some innings in, this was the first time he pitched in 2014.  Making the jump up will be a semi-familiar face to Baffin, Bobby Dunlap, who was with the team in ST and a cup of coffee in 2013 will be taking Castillos spot in the roto.  Dunlap's numbers last year with the Beavers were  3-6 with a 4.85 ERA.  He will be given an honest chance to stay up with the big club.

The Beavers look forward to the next few games against El Paso and playoff Rival LA Bruins.

Curses and Inuit doctors.

With great anticipation the Beavers fans expected a better showing than what they got, splitting 2 with New York, and losing the first one to Los Cabos.  What made the opening series worse is highly anticipated Nam-Cheol Chong was injured in his start.  Resulting in elbow inflammation that will cause him to miss 3 months.  This leaves some fans wondering, "Is it the curse of Luke Pittman?"  The most injury prone Beaver to ever dawn the jersey, who was traded for Chong.  Did the curse remain on the island, or just bad luck.  The locals seem to think the curse has been left on the Island even after Pittman has left, so local Inuit doctors have already began formulating home-grown remedies, and carving soapstone Inukshuks as a homeage to their gods in hopes Chong will return to the Beaver Dam soon.

This leaves who will be taking the slack in the rotation?  GM Aaron Blank was busy this offseason, signing many borderline and old SP's to minor league deals in order to build depth...which we need all too soon.  The Beavers GM loves experience, so he will be calling up from AA, a former LA Bruin SP Carlos Castillo a tryout with the big club.

Castillo pitched last year in El Paso, to not much success in 21 starts, going 4-11 with an 8.71 ERA, but we're hoping that he can turn it around at the pitcher friendly park here in Iqaluit. Not to mention an already staff full of leaders and an amazing talented pitching coach, it shouldn't be long before Castillo can find his groove again.

Some high points from the start of the season include:

OF Zach Hutchinson .421 AVG, 1 HR and 2 SB
3B Jason Jackson .412 AVG, 2 3B and .444 OBP
1B Charlie Murdock .304 AVG and 2 HR
OF Michael Jackson .400 AVG and 1 SB
SP Jimmy Sanders 8 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 K and 1.13 ERA
SP Nick Reed 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 K and 2.57 ERA

There is always room for improvement for everyone's stats, but we all know it's early.  The Beavers look forward to the next set of games when they will be facing former opening day starter and former Beaver, Allan Landry in Los Cabos.  Another former Beaver will be faced after Los Cabos, good ole' CarGo in New Orleans now, will be be as dominant at the Beaver Dam as he was in a Beavers uni, stay tuned fer the next recap!

It should be a gooder

Opening Day is here!!!

With this news the Beavers prepare to defend their division title this year.  With Boston being fairly quiet this offseason, although acquiring JT Franceour at the deadline last year and McQuid's new baby the Cleveland Monsters, the division looks a little tougher than it used to be.  But GM Aaron Blank feels confident about this year's edition of the Baffin Island Beavers.

The starting rotation will be as predicted in ST: Jimmy Sanders will be getting the opening day start, much like he did in 2010, and 2011 with the Beavers, followed by Javier Rodriguez, Nam-cheol Chong, Harvey Phillips and Nick Reed.

The bullpen will include: Jesus Hernandez, Wayne Poole, Arthur Smeeth, Lloyd MacBride, Javier Martinez, Trevor McCain, Kenneth Duncan and old-balls closer Marcos 'Piece of Shit' Dominguez.

The positions as well are what were predicted except the Beavers finally decided who will join Hutch and Yates in the OF: Michael Jackson and Jessy Veenbrink.

The Beavers open up against division foe New York Knights for 4 games and the lineups will look something like this.

Beavers Unveil New Logo and Jerseys

With ST underway, the Beavers unveil new, long-awaited new jerseys for the 2014 year.

"It was time to turn a new leaf," owner Aaron Blank commented at a recent press conference, "we needed to create a new era of Beavers history especially after dealing Pittman, Paquette and Landry. What better way to do it than with new a new logo, jerseys and caps!"

The new logo shows a more intense, angry Beavers, signifying the desire for this team to finally bring home the chamionship.

The new jerseys pay tribute to the Great White North, as many Americans know it as, with the white caps, but also a traditonal Maple Leaf to signify that the Baffin Island Beavers are, and always will be Canada's team.  Also rather than have Baffin Island on the jerseys, the designer decided to go with just "ISLAND" signifying the team is the only one in the BSA, actually on an island, I think.  The new jerseys and caps begin sale immediately at $39.99 for the hat and $119.99 for the jersey (no name), and $199.99 for a Javier Rodriguez, reigning Cy Young award winner jersey.

Offseason Moves and Spring Training Underway

Well ST is finally underway and the Beavers welcome some new and old faces. Also saying goodbye to some key pieces, but after last year's failure in the Championship series to the Evil Empire, the Beavers needed to ramp up efforts to win.

Gone: OF Luke Pittman, 3B David Paquette, SP CarGo, SP Allan Landry, OF Pedro Rosales, CL Walt Davis, C Takashi Ohayashi and some specs all via trade.

SP Julio Lopez and SP Jules Paradis to FA.

Arriving: IF Jason Jackson, OF Michael "This Is It" Jackson, DH Antonio Garza, SP Nam-cheol Chong, OF Jason Newbury, MR Kenneth Duncan, OF Joe Henderson, SP Jimmy Sanders, IF Cale O'Brien, MR Javier Martinez, SP Nick Reed and SP Antonio Munoz.

The Beaver also secured their future signing the likes of OF Damien Yates, C Danny Kelly, SS Marcos Mesa, 2B Alvin King, MR Jesus Hernandez, SP Javier 'Gigolo' Rodriguez, C/1B Elijah Stuart, MR Lloyd MacBride and MR Arthur Smeeth to contract extensions.

The Beavers may have lost some good SP's to FA, but brought back fan favourtie Jimmy Sanders, young stud Nam-cheol Chong and Nick Reed to help out J-Rod and Harv Phillips.

Even though Spring Training just started the rotation looks locked up.

Jimmy Sanders, Javier Rodriguez, Nam-cheol Chong, Harvey Phillips and Nick Reed.

The pen to pitch behind those spectacular starters.

Trevor McCain, Lloyd MacBride, Arthur Smeeth, Kenneth Duncan, Jesus Hernandez, Javier Martinez, Marcos Dominguez and Wayne Poole.

Catchers, of course, Danny Kelly will be the starter, with returning Beaver C/1B Elijah Stuart platooning as backup C and 1B.

After a stellar rookie year Charlie Murdock will be returning to start at 1B and hope to build to a spectacular sophomore season.

Middle Infielders, of course, the dynamic duo of Alvin King and Marcos Mesa, those two are inseperable in and out of the ballpark, drinking before and after the games working on their double plays even on the womend they take home...

At 3B, the departure of David Paquette was tough to swallow, but Manager George Sime is confident that offseason acquisition Jason Jackson will learn the position to satisfactory standards and bring a well needed offensive boost to the Beavers.

Backup IF: Cale O'Brien will platoon around the diamond as backup for these guys but the Beavers want to carry one more util IF, who will it be, well it may look like Frits den Breejen, or Pedro Gonzales. The end of ST will tell who will get to stay with the big club.

The OF:

Not even up for discussion who is starting in 2 of the OF spots, Zach Hutchinson and Roadrunner Damien Yates.

Which leaves one starting spot up for grabs.  With the departure of Luke Pittman, the Beavers made some small minor-league trades for fringe players who fit the Beaver game, speed and contact.  Michael Jackson, Joe Henderson, Jessy Veenbrink, Jose Figueroa, Jason Newbury and Julio Mendoza all fit the profile, but only 2 will be kept for the season, again wait until the end of ST to see who!

And at DH, which has never been a strong suit for the Beavers, the team finally decided to fill that spot a priority this year, bringing in Antonio Garza. Garza may have had an off year last year but looks to rebound with his new club.

The Beavers so far are 3-2 in ST, looking to improve on that.
