2015 Draft Review

Another year, another draft for the Beavers.  Many believed the Beavers would be set back a slight bit this year, they were right.  The Islanders flew out of the gates leading the division for a few weeks, but since Boston has found their gear and taken the lead.  So Beavers fans look to the future.

Since Cal Rhodes was signed as a comp 'B' pick the Beavers lost their low 1st round pick, but still recieved a 1st round supp pick instead. With that pick the Beavers decided to take SP Boboy "Divine" Ambay.  Divine, since joining Barry's Bay has thrown some gems. Game one - CG, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB and 8 K getting the win, in his second game he tossed 7.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB and 6 K, again getting the win.  Ambay, who the Beavers scouts are high on is expected to learn another pitch this coming year.

In the 2nd round the Beavers took SP Jeff Catron, who like "Divine", will begin his year in A-ball. Catron has just signed his entry contract, look for him to as well learn a 3rd pitch.

In retrospect to last year's draft. SP Robert Reeves has been nothing short of stellar.  After 11 starts in single A Barry's Bay last year, going 5-4 with a 3.29 ERA, Reeves started this year off with a "BANG" in A-ball, showing that A-ball is not a challenge posting a 1.50 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 52 K.  He immediately recieved a promotion to double A Balzac, where in 18 games he has gone 11-5 with a 4.47 ERA, only 8 HR against, 1.43 WHIP and a .243 OAVG.  Sure his ERA is high, but he's still 20, with a winning record as well.  As long as Reeves continues to develop like he is, he will be a force on the big club.

In other news, the Beavers are still waiting for SP Carlos Bamber to return from the DL, scout Flint Matthews hopes Bamber can recover and pitch well in single A Barry's Bay to gain his form back.

Beavers Draft In Review

The Beavers had a decent draft by managements view.

"We felt we were weak in the SP spec department, so we went out and drafted as many good ones as we could," a drunk GM Aaron Blank told reporters the day after the draft.

"We liked sohf ahgweonfvnb hghjs////?????????????"

Ah fuck it, he's drunk, here's what the scout thinks.

The 35th overall pick was SP Robert Reeves. Look for Reeves to (hopefully sign) go to single A affiliate Barry's Bay and start his Beavers career there, with only 2 pitches, both good, look for Reeves to develop a third breaking pitch the next few years in the minor system.

Next with the 49th overall pick, the Beavers took SP Luis Silva. Very different pitcher than Reeves, Silva has 2 breaking pitches compared to Reeves fast and change. Silva is def a GB pitcher which plays well into the Beavers favour with a stellar defense. Look for Silva to also learn a 3rd pitch.

52nd overall was SP Raul Flores, who doesn't have as high a ceiling as the first 2 do, but still has tools to make him a good candidate for a 5th spot in the roto.

The 65th pick brought SP Ricardo Sanchez. Look for Sanchez to make the transition to the bullpen immediately due to his low stamina. His history of a starter should help his ability to close out games.  Not to mention his 3 pitches already (Rodrigo Ramon anyone?)

Fast forward to the 135th pick overall where the Baffin Island Beavers finally decided to take a position player in SS Manuel Rios. Hailing from California, Rios has no intelligence whatsoever, but works like a friggen mule. Rios is exceptional on the defensive end but will need to work on his bat if he can make it to the show. Many defensive specialists have worked their way up to the Beavers glorious Beaver Dam, but can Rios do it?

These draftees can hopefully mean the beginning of another great Beaver era in say...3 years.

And The Beaver Hat Goes To...

Every month the Beavers have one exceptional hitter. This month it was OF Jose Figueroa.

After being acquired from division foe New York Knights last year in a deal involving Harvey Phillips, the Beavers thought they had found the backup OF they sought after.

That didn't work out too well, Figgy struggled with the big club only managing a .220 AVG and .314 OBP.  He was sent down to AAA Waba to work on some things.

In Waba he did okay, in 58 games hit .301 with a .375 OBP, not bad.

Figgy struggled in ST, losing the one available OF spot and one backup role on the island. So being sent to AAA wasn't a bad idea.

He was electric for the Waba Ducks, managing a .349 AVG, .410 OBP and a6 SB's. Figgy earned his promotion to the big club when Lee Brouthers couldn't hack it up there.

Since being called up Jose has lit up the BSA up, posting a .375 AVG, .423 OBP and 3 SB in 22 games.

In July he has been exceptionally hot with a near .400 AVG at .396, a .423 OBP.

That tops the AVG and OBP category for the Beavers in the month of July, thus earning Figgy the 'Beaver Hat'

Rehab Works, well maybe not AA...

Ever since Nam-cheol Chong came to the island in the deal that sent former MVP Luke Pittman packing, Beaver fans anticipated seeing him pitch at the Beaver Dam.  He was thought to put up astonishing numbers in the Great White North only to have his elbow inflame and cause him to miss 3 months.

Fast forward to now, where Chong has put in 3 minor league rehab starts in Waba.  His first outing was good, especially since coming off the DL.

VS Zanesville Chong went 7 innings, allowing 9 hits, 3 earned runs while striking out 5.

His next start was better where he faced the Charlotte Jackals, going 7 innings, 6 hits, 1 earned run and striking out 4.

His latest start manager Momoru Kato thought Chnog was ready to go the full game. He did, pitching a CG, not without struggles though, allowing 11 hits and 5 ER, although Chong did K 11.

"We feel his stamina is there, he's worked hard to get back to ML form.  We don't look too much into ER yet, we feel that most hits in AAA will be turned into outs at the 'zoo-sized' Beaver Dam." GM Aaron Blank stated as he plopped onto a picnic table outside of the Zoo...err I mean the Beaver Dam.

As for the 'Fastest man alve' Damien Yates, his rehab stint in AAA is okay. In his first 9 games down on the farm, Yates has his swing, hitting a very nice .353, OBP of .450 and 5 steals.  So far very good, until he sprained his elbow, setting him back another 3 weeks.  Ugghhh

Shopping Is Fun When You're On The Island

June was a month of activity for GM Aaron Blank and the Baffin Island Beavers organization. The offseason saw players brought in to improve this teams dynamic.  Sadly, those players flopped.

The flurry of trades started on May 31, when Madison and Baffin Island agreed on a deal to send Waba Duck favourite SP Bobby Dunlap to the Bombers for RF Gabriel Santana. Dunlap was thought by many to see the tundra in Baffin for a long period of time, but just never adjusted to it.

Asked about the reasoning behind the deal Aaron Blank stated this,"When the Madison organization approached us about a 5th SP, we though this would be an opportunity for Bobby to find his own, sadly he just couldn't here on the island. So maybe he'll find it in Wisconson."

Santana still young at 18, and still has yet to take the field as a member of AA affiliate Balzac Rams due to his injury.

The second deal was rather a huge splash.  Jason Jackson, who was brought in to solidify the IF, just couldn't find his footing on the tundra in Baffin Island, he commited too many errors at 18 and couldn't find his stroke either, hitting a miserable .220.  Jackson along with minor leaguers 1B Rob Moore, SP Brett Dwyer, MR Kyoshi Asano and MR Emilio Cordero were sent packing to *the* O-R-L for fellow Canadian Rodger Hinton and mop-up man Brandon Barrett.

That deal totally solidified the rotation for the Beavers. If all goes well and everyone can stay healthy, expect to rotation to be deadly-looking like this:

Jimmy Sanders
J-Rod
Nam-cheol Chong
Harvey Phillips/K-Tak
Rodger Hinton

Or if everyone stays hot, the team may need to go to a 6-man rotation. Mind you none of these names are as recognizable as the names in LA or Hendersonville, you should get used to them. They'll be around for a while.

With Jackson moved from the Island and Marcos Mesa still struggling to find his magic from the last two years. There was a hole left on the corner position. So GM Aaron Blank turned to a familiar team for The Douching Beaver, Joe Henderson.  The Beaver and D-Bags agreed to terms on a deal that would send 3B Pedro Hernandez to the Bags for minor-league IF Xin Zhang and OF Jerry Kennedy. Hernandez has tremendous speed, which the Beavers like, and also gets to play alongside his former Trout Slayer teammate Joe Henderson.

In two other deals, still pending Commish approval the Beavers will solve the recent problems at the back-end of the bullpen. Before Marcos Dominguez tore his labrum he blew a few too many games. So the team addressed that by acquiring two very viable options.

The first is CL Rodrigo Ramon, who will be brought over along with OF Bob Hicks in exchange for SP Nick "I don't know how to pitch in the BSA ML" Reed and 2B Pepe Gonzales.  Ramon, who pitched very well in the TOR/OKL minor league system, never got the chance at ML yet, due to too many very good arms.  May get the chance at a premium position on the Island.  Only time will tell.

The second in CL Eric Turner, who was acquired earlier today from Maui for SP Arturo Munoz.  Turner has been solid for the Maui organization, had the best year in AA last year seeing his ERA at a good low 0.97 with 17 saves.  The Beaver organization looks forward to having Turner develop more with the Waba Ducks before he takes the big stage in Iqaluit.

On a lighter note, Nam-cheol Chong was activated from the DL and sent on rehab assignment to AAA Waba to work on his recovery, stay tuned for updates.

Beavers Continue Roll Towards October

Many people wrote the Beavers off this year, saying they'd miss the playoffs. Stating that last year this team 'overacheived'. Nobody told the Beavers.

Well into June, the Beavers find themselves one of the hottest teams in the BSA right meow.  Sitting with a record of 45-32, good enough to hold 2nd place in the East, and 4 up in the Wildcard for the all-important playoff spot.

Mind you these Beavers have had their struggles, while crushing LHP to lead them to a 19-4 record against the southpaws, RHP has been a kryptonite for this team, only at 26-28.

"After last years' collapse against the Hitmen, front-loaded with LHP, we looked at our team and determined we needed to address that issue." Aaron Blank told reporters, "we brought in new bats and old ones are mashing LHP, Kelly's slamming them at a .369 clip, Howlin' Mad Murdock at .370 with 6 dingers, hell even Big Z is killing at a .310 clip with 3 jacks vs LHP. With most guys contributing, this Beaver team is Legen - wait for it - darily overacheiving."

The Beavers also show no quit, many times coming from behind to force extra-innings, as seen in the Hitmen series. This leads the Beavers to an astounding 16-3 record in one-run games. Speed has a lot to do with this, after all these guys lead all the BSA in SB's with 115.

The pitching has also come around, 4 out of the 5 starters are all on hot-streaks and lead the NL SP's ERA with 3.10 and 3rd overalll at 3.30. Not bad at all.

To make the critics happy defence is also a huge part of playing in Baffin, after all, the field is frozen tundra and the size of a zoo. Which leads the pitchers BABIP to be an astonishingly low .254 with original Beaver Jimmy Sanders leading the way with a .216 BABIP.

Look out for these hot Beavers, they may take your city by storm.

Spotlight on "The Polish Prince"

"Kocham żeby grać dla takiej wielkiej organizacji," is what SP Teos Kovel was exclaimed as he was interviewed by a reporter for the Warsaw Times.  (Translated, it means 'I love playing for such a great organization!')

Kovel's career didn't start as easy as it did for his American, Canadian, Mexican, Carribean or Japanese teammates.  He was born into poverty in Klodzko, Poland to his father who was a potato farmer and a homemaker mother.  His younger years were spent in the potato field harvesting by hand with his father and older brothers, but it wasn't always hard work.  The boys would sometimes play a very basic version of what we call baseball in North America.

Teos would harvest a rotton potato every now and again and challenge his brothers to hit it with the hoe they used to harvest the potatoes.  They never could.  This continued until a scout from Duke was vacationing in the area and noticed these kids in the field.

"The one Polack just had a wicked arm, nothing I had ever seen before in Eastern Europe, the epitomy of raw talent," scout Macsimillion Johnson told reporters. "I had to get this kid to America to harness his talent."

With that, Teos was on the next flight to the U.S. to give himself a better life.

His college career never got off the ground, his lowest ERA was in his freshman year where he went 2-5 with a 5.03 ERA.

He was drafted in 2010, in the 6th round by the Long Beach Havens. He appeared in 5 games with a 14.73 ERA.  The next year was also a struggle for the Potato Farmer, going 10-12 with a 5.10 in Nantucket.  He was then released that year and signed a minor league deal in January 2012 with the Pocatello organization.

This was a rebound year for Teos, he started the year in A-ball, going 6-4 with a 2.59 ERA in 12 starts which earned him a promotion to AA-ball where in 18 starts he went 4-5 with a 4.22 ERA.

In 2012 Teos appeared in 3 games before being released, he would never pitch again in 2013.  Teos returned home, thinking he was a failure.  He continued to farm with his father until he recieved a call from Canada.

Aaron Blank, GM of the world-renowned Baffin Island Beavers called and wanted Teos to return to baseball as a member of this storied franchise.

"Ja było więcej niż pobudzany robić to! (I was more than excited to do it)" Teos explained.  It was like a dream come true to him.

"As many of you may not know, I am of Polish descent myself, so whenever I see raw talent like this from the old country, I just have to do something about it.  With Teos, it was simple, he was a SP and we needed more in our minors.  It just breaks my heart sometimes when these kids don't get a chance to make something of their life, so I do all that I can.  We are even working something out with Teos to run baseball recruitment camps over there, although that is quite a ways from happeneing. But we're working on it.

Teos immediately made it to the rotation in AA Balzac with the Rams.

Teos is undefeated in his 12 starts going 9-0 with a 2.77 ERA 43 BB and 94 K.

"Teos has been awesome for this staff, he does anything he can to win, but he's also a prankster," explains manager Willis French

Kovel will continue to pitch in AA and hone his talents there, but a promotion may be in order. Although Teos isn't looking too far into the future. He knows his time could be limited so he is just happy to throw from the mound 60' 6" away from home plate.

Start of June is Wicked.

May ended very well for the Beavers.  The team got back on track and that resumed well into June.  The first series started on the road in tourist town Niagara Falls.

June 1st, the Beavers lost that game after Ace Jimmy Sanders was shelled for 6 H, 5 ER, 3 HR in only 3.2 IP.

"I just didn't have my stuff today, sometimes a day like this comes and you just have to forget about it," was the quote from Jimmy Sanders in the post-game press conference.

The team just wasn't right that game either, not one single attempted stolen base. Something manager George Sime wants changed ASAP.  "Speed is such a huge part of our game, we can't always mash out the home runs to win games, sometimes we have to manufacture runs." Sime stated in press conference.

June 2nd, the conclusion of the NFF series saw reigning Cy Young award winner Javier Rodriguez take on veteran Ethan Pickup.  The Beavers made the scorboard light up with one early in the 1st when recent call-up, Joe "The Douching Beaver" Henderson ripped the third pitch he saw for a double.  Two batters later, Henderson came home on a throwing error from the Frenzy's CF on Zach Hutchinson's single,

Javier Rodriguez then took the game over only allowing 1 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 6 K in a solid 8 innings of work, earning the dub.

After an off-day the Beavers flew home to Iqaluit, Nunavut Territory, Canada to welcome reigning BSA Champeens Hendersonville Hitmen.

The first game of the series had the mis-match of all mis-matches in the SP department.  For H'ville, Mike Haward, who himself, no-hit the Beavers last year pitted against very unproven SP Katsuhiko Takaki.  Both gave solid outings of 7.1 IP with 3 ER each.  Neither starter would factor into the decision though.

This game was a marathon, going into the 16 inning and after 2 blown saves by the Hitmen.  Alvin King was the 2nd batter to take th box in the bottom half, ripping a triple in Baffin's massive park setting up the inevitable.  Lee Brouthers was up next but was intentionally walked, Joe Henderson struck out, bringing up lackluster Jason Jackson.  Jackson didn't waste any time, fouling off the 1st pitch he saw, then slapping a single to drive in King...game over, Beavers defeat the Hitmen in 16 innings!!

Game two saw the newly acquired Hitmen's Marcos Pinieda face Harvey Phillips.  Phillips silenced the Hitmen bats with a solid 7.2 IP, 5 H, 0 BB and 4 K.  But the Beavers bats were less than silent, both Zach Hutchinson and Charlie Murdock jacked 2 HR each.

Game three was also very entertaining, the Hitmen sent Carlos Arevalo to the mound to face Lloyd MacBride.  Both pitchers threw a solid 6 innings and only 2 ER each.  This game also saw a blown save, only for it to happen to the Beavers in the 8th inning.  Setting up Hasegawa to hit the GW HR in the top of the 10th against the $19 million man, Marcos Dominguez.

"We had a chance to sweep them, but we got ahead of ourselves in that game.  After all they are the reiging champs, other teams may have been down-and-out in the 8 or 9 inning, but not H'ville. I mean, have you seen their roster?" explained George Sime to reporters.

The next series saw the St. Louis Browns come to town, with Jimmy Sanders, again, getting out-pitched.  This time by Kisho Kichida. Losing 2-0 hurts the high the Beavers just came of off taking 2 of 3 from H'ville.

The next two games saw J-Rod and K-Tak both get dubs over Eddy Buckley and Tim Welply.  Only allowing 1 run in those two games.  The Beavers look forward to the next set against St. Charles and Cleveland.

Baffin welcomes The Douching Beaver to the bigs! And May Review

May has been a good month for the Beavers, seeing them go 17-9. Many hitters finally found their way out of their slumps:

C Danny Kelly .284 AVG in May
1B Charlie Murdock .360 AVG, 9 dingers and 27 RBI in May
UTIL IF Cale O-Brien contributing well with a .330 AVG and .398 OBP in May, a welcomed surprise with the floundering Mesa finding himelf in AAA
OF Lee Brouthers is pitching in quite well with 5 RBI in 8 games, mind you only batting .192
DH Antonio Garza found his stroke hitting .302 and knock out 5 with 13 RBI in May
Good ole OF Zach Hutchinson is back to being a monster in May, batting .333 and a .402 OBP, 6 HR and 21 RBI

Sadly, the Beavers lost the catalyst to most of their offense this past week.  Damien Yates went down for 5 weeks with a partially torn labrum.  He, in May, was batting at a .297 clip, .375 OBP, 4 HR and 11 SB in May.  He will be missed for the rest of May and all of June.

But brought up to hopefully keep the offense rolling will be former D-Bag OF Joe"The Douching Beaver" Henderson.  Down on the farm in AAA, Henderson has been pelting (haha, get it, pelting?) opposing pitching with a .342 AVG, .443 OBP 28 RBI and 17 SB.

May was also a good month for pitchers on the Island,

SP Jimmy Sanders was 3-1 with a 2.41 ERA
Rookie SP Katsuhiko Takaki was 4-1 with a 1.87 ERA giving up 0 HR!
SP Harvey "Rowdy" Phillips went 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA and 22 K
MR Wayne Poole had 7 appearances while having a 0.00 ERA

With the loss of Damien Yates, the lineups have shifted to something that will look like this

Spotlight on "Howlin' Mad"

In this very short season, one star has emerged for the Baffin Island Beavers.

1B Charlie "Howlin' Mad" Murdock

His career as a Beaver didn't start so well, he was acquired to fill the need for a 1B prior to the 2012 season for C/1B Elijah Stuart.  He has a very good ST that year, but floundered in the first 37 games, batting a horrible .176 with 0 HR.  He was demoted to AAA Waba where he need to tailer his swing to handle big league pitching.

He immediately made a huge impact there, in the 68 games he played he bashed out 22 HR's, driving in 72 RBI with a .375 AVG, .404 OBP and .675 SLG!

In 2013, with the big club, he earned his spot at 1B.  For the year he batted .278, driving out 29 HR and batting in 129. Not bad for his first full year.

So far in 2014, "Howlin' Mad" has been just that, mad at the ball, just tearing the cover off of it.  In 46 games he has 14 jacks, 35 RBI with an AVG of .346 and SLG on .613.  Murdock has been clutch for the Beavers so far, and the future looks bright for this power hitting first baseman.  He isn't no slouch defensively either, rated as 14 at his only position he fits what Baffin needed when they traded for him.

"We felt we needed to put a power bat at 1st, for the first two years we didn't have that.  Murdock fit the bill perfectly, and he was great defensively.  So all-in-all a perfect match for Howlin' Mad",  Aaron Blank was quoted saying from an undisclosed location near the Wheafield Inn & Bar in Kitscoty, AB 23 km west on Lloydminster, AB.

Look for this guy to be a key player in Baffin's resurgence this year.

BTW Trav, :P

Thursday 16 February 2012

Beavers look to old balls to help out offense.

With the recent demotion of SP Nick Reed freeing up a spot on the active roster GM Aaron Blank has decided to call up an experienced OF.

Lee Brouthers

Filling the need for another LH power bat in the line-up, Brouthers fits that mould.

Brouthers has had a good career in the BSA so far, in the inaugural draft in 2010 he was taken by Madison.  He has two 20+ HR seasons there before being shipped to hell-hole LA mid-way through 2012 where he hit an abismal .220 AVG, while still knocking out 17 jacks. He was then again a platoon bat for LA in 2013, hitting .225 with 5 HR.

He spent ST in 2014 with Cleveland but was immediately released before the season started.

Then he wanted a Beaver....err wanted to become a Beaver (Yea, that's right)

He promptly signed a minor league deal with the Iqaluit-based franchise and in 21 games and 69 AB at AAA Waba he has batted .275, with 7 HR and 15 RBI with 17 BB.  With those stats its clear he deserves another shot at the bigs.

Look for him to get every 2nd start in LF vs RHP.

April Sours bring May Powers??

April was a horrendous month for the Beavers going 13-15.  With noone really stepping up to lead this team into May.  Here's to hoping May can bring these guys together.

So far into May the team is 8-6 bringing the total team record to an even .500 at 21-21.  Staff leader Jimmy Sanders is heading the staff with a 2.83 ERA and a 4-3 W-L record.  J-Rod hasn't been his 2013 self, but he has been solid with a 3.75 and 3-2 W-L record.  The pen is solid, headed by Lloyd MacBride, who was in trade discussions earlier this season, but has since become a staple in the pen with a 0.87 ERA in 20.2 IP.  Now to the shit-head of the pitching staff.  Nick Reed, who was brought in to be an anchor at the #5 hole in the rotation has been terrible, going 0-5 with a 6.02 ERA, will be sent down to AAA to gain some sort of form back.  Lloyd MacBride will be taking the spot in the roto for a 2 starts at least.

As for the bats, they are starting to heat back up, Danny Kelly up to a .254 AVG with 5 HR, hot as hell Charlie Murdock has been a RBI machine, hitting .333 with 12 HR and 30 RBI.  Zach Hutchinson has been close behind with a .273 AVG, 7 HR and 28 RBI.

The minors have also been a hugh spot for the Baffin organization with AAA Waba Ducks at 23-13 so far and AA Balzac at an astounding 29-8.

Beavers April and Results of Fan Contest

April is pretty much a write-off at this point for the Beavers, three weeks in and the guys are only 8-10.  Notoriously slow starters, the Beavers didn't think it would be this much of a struggle to get going.  With Zach Hutchinson and Damien Yates only hitting .235 and .224 respectively these key players need to get going sooner rather than later.  Marcos Mesa has been sent down to AAA to find his swing, as he has options left.  Brought up to fill the void will be 3B Ronald Reardon who has been hitting decently in AAA, hitting at a .395 clip with a OPS of .916.

Some bright spots in the rotation are Jimmy Sanders who is overall a 2-1 with a 1.82 ERA, and Harvey Phillips has just had bad luck, going 0-2 with a 2.86 ERA.  Coming back to reality is J-Rod, in his last start against San Francisco he went 8 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.  Highly touted within the Beavers organization Bobby Dunlap flopped on his face in his last 2 starts, and abruptly was sent down to AAA.  In an effort to get some consistency the Beavers hope SP Katsuhiko Takaki can fill somewhat of a void. Takaki has had decent minor league starts in the past, but no big league starts.

As stated before, April has not been a fun one for the fans in Baffin Island.  Being swept by LA, losing series to New Orleans, Los Cabos and splitting with New York is not what GM Aaron Blank wants to hear.  But one bright spot this opening month is ball-mashing 1B Charlie Murdock.

Murdock has been tearing the cover off the ball, hitting with a .359 AVG, .667 SLG, 7 HR and 14 RBI in April so far.

Looking into May, the Beavers have a decently tough schedule, going against Boston, Vista, Regina, Maui, New Orleans, Jacksonville, El Paso, Los Cabos, San Francisco and finish with Niagara Falls.

One final note here, a recent contest which allowed Beavers fans all around the world were given the chance to vote for various pre-game, entrance and walk-up tunes for their favourite Beavers.  Here are their results:

Frustration Boils Over In The Land of Tundra

It was another lackluster few days for the Beavers, losing to Los Cabos, but then taking the win over them against a former Beaver in Allan Landry.  But the highlight of the sim was the first game between New Orleans Looters and the Beavers at the Beaver Dam.

After SP Carlos Castillo was shelled, the Beaver bullpen took over with MacBride coming in to calm things down, only to give way to Wayne Poole.  After surrendering a solo bomb, Poole wanted to see how mentally tough these clowns are from New Orleans.  Clearly not tough at all, Poole merely tried to brush back Errol Hughes at the plate with a 95 MPH fastball, only to see Hughes lean into it.

"What the f*** is this bulls&$*!" Wayne Poole could be heard yelling to Retardo Hughes.  Hughes clearly does not enjoy having his real name uttered and so in tune went all postal on Poole.  Local TV station Inuit 10468 on Bell ExpressVu was there to capture it all.

After the game Poole stated, "I was simply brushing him back from my plate, there's a written rule in baseball to try and do everything possible to avoid being hit.  Clearly Hughes is too stupid to figure that one out.  So I attempted to pummel some sense into him."

"I do not condone any statements Wayne Poole makes, I will review his statements and determine if a fine is in order," GM Aaron Blank phoned into local media from an undisclosed location.

Moving on, the Beavers do have a few bright spots, the top 3 performers these past few days were
1B Charlie Murdock : 23 AB, 9 H, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .391 AVG, 1.130 OPS
OF Michael Jackson : 12 AB, 6 H, 0 HR, 3 RBI, .500 AVG, 1.333 OPS
OF Damien Yates : 22 AB, 7 H, 1 HR, 5 RBI, .318 AVG, .920 OPS

After Carlos Castillos shelling, it has been determined he will be moved back down to AAA to get some innings in, this was the first time he pitched in 2014.  Making the jump up will be a semi-familiar face to Baffin, Bobby Dunlap, who was with the team in ST and a cup of coffee in 2013 will be taking Castillos spot in the roto.  Dunlap's numbers last year with the Beavers were  3-6 with a 4.85 ERA.  He will be given an honest chance to stay up with the big club.

The Beavers look forward to the next few games against El Paso and playoff Rival LA Bruins.

Curses and Inuit doctors.

With great anticipation the Beavers fans expected a better showing than what they got, splitting 2 with New York, and losing the first one to Los Cabos.  What made the opening series worse is highly anticipated Nam-Cheol Chong was injured in his start.  Resulting in elbow inflammation that will cause him to miss 3 months.  This leaves some fans wondering, "Is it the curse of Luke Pittman?"  The most injury prone Beaver to ever dawn the jersey, who was traded for Chong.  Did the curse remain on the island, or just bad luck.  The locals seem to think the curse has been left on the Island even after Pittman has left, so local Inuit doctors have already began formulating home-grown remedies, and carving soapstone Inukshuks as a homeage to their gods in hopes Chong will return to the Beaver Dam soon.

This leaves who will be taking the slack in the rotation?  GM Aaron Blank was busy this offseason, signing many borderline and old SP's to minor league deals in order to build depth...which we need all too soon.  The Beavers GM loves experience, so he will be calling up from AA, a former LA Bruin SP Carlos Castillo a tryout with the big club.

Castillo pitched last year in El Paso, to not much success in 21 starts, going 4-11 with an 8.71 ERA, but we're hoping that he can turn it around at the pitcher friendly park here in Iqaluit. Not to mention an already staff full of leaders and an amazing talented pitching coach, it shouldn't be long before Castillo can find his groove again.

Some high points from the start of the season include:

OF Zach Hutchinson .421 AVG, 1 HR and 2 SB
3B Jason Jackson .412 AVG, 2 3B and .444 OBP
1B Charlie Murdock .304 AVG and 2 HR
OF Michael Jackson .400 AVG and 1 SB
SP Jimmy Sanders 8 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 K and 1.13 ERA
SP Nick Reed 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 K and 2.57 ERA

There is always room for improvement for everyone's stats, but we all know it's early.  The Beavers look forward to the next set of games when they will be facing former opening day starter and former Beaver, Allan Landry in Los Cabos.  Another former Beaver will be faced after Los Cabos, good ole' CarGo in New Orleans now, will be be as dominant at the Beaver Dam as he was in a Beavers uni, stay tuned fer the next recap!

It should be a gooder

Opening Day is here!!!

With this news the Beavers prepare to defend their division title this year.  With Boston being fairly quiet this offseason, although acquiring JT Franceour at the deadline last year and McQuid's new baby the Cleveland Monsters, the division looks a little tougher than it used to be.  But GM Aaron Blank feels confident about this year's edition of the Baffin Island Beavers.

The starting rotation will be as predicted in ST: Jimmy Sanders will be getting the opening day start, much like he did in 2010, and 2011 with the Beavers, followed by Javier Rodriguez, Nam-cheol Chong, Harvey Phillips and Nick Reed.

The bullpen will include: Jesus Hernandez, Wayne Poole, Arthur Smeeth, Lloyd MacBride, Javier Martinez, Trevor McCain, Kenneth Duncan and old-balls closer Marcos 'Piece of Shit' Dominguez.

The positions as well are what were predicted except the Beavers finally decided who will join Hutch and Yates in the OF: Michael Jackson and Jessy Veenbrink.

The Beavers open up against division foe New York Knights for 4 games and the lineups will look something like this.

Beavers Unveil New Logo and Jerseys

With ST underway, the Beavers unveil new, long-awaited new jerseys for the 2014 year.

"It was time to turn a new leaf," owner Aaron Blank commented at a recent press conference, "we needed to create a new era of Beavers history especially after dealing Pittman, Paquette and Landry. What better way to do it than with new a new logo, jerseys and caps!"

The new logo shows a more intense, angry Beavers, signifying the desire for this team to finally bring home the chamionship.

The new jerseys pay tribute to the Great White North, as many Americans know it as, with the white caps, but also a traditonal Maple Leaf to signify that the Baffin Island Beavers are, and always will be Canada's team.  Also rather than have Baffin Island on the jerseys, the designer decided to go with just "ISLAND" signifying the team is the only one in the BSA, actually on an island, I think.  The new jerseys and caps begin sale immediately at $39.99 for the hat and $119.99 for the jersey (no name), and $199.99 for a Javier Rodriguez, reigning Cy Young award winner jersey.

Offseason Moves and Spring Training Underway

Well ST is finally underway and the Beavers welcome some new and old faces. Also saying goodbye to some key pieces, but after last year's failure in the Championship series to the Evil Empire, the Beavers needed to ramp up efforts to win.

Gone: OF Luke Pittman, 3B David Paquette, SP CarGo, SP Allan Landry, OF Pedro Rosales, CL Walt Davis, C Takashi Ohayashi and some specs all via trade.

SP Julio Lopez and SP Jules Paradis to FA.

Arriving: IF Jason Jackson, OF Michael "This Is It" Jackson, DH Antonio Garza, SP Nam-cheol Chong, OF Jason Newbury, MR Kenneth Duncan, OF Joe Henderson, SP Jimmy Sanders, IF Cale O'Brien, MR Javier Martinez, SP Nick Reed and SP Antonio Munoz.

The Beaver also secured their future signing the likes of OF Damien Yates, C Danny Kelly, SS Marcos Mesa, 2B Alvin King, MR Jesus Hernandez, SP Javier 'Gigolo' Rodriguez, C/1B Elijah Stuart, MR Lloyd MacBride and MR Arthur Smeeth to contract extensions.

The Beavers may have lost some good SP's to FA, but brought back fan favourtie Jimmy Sanders, young stud Nam-cheol Chong and Nick Reed to help out J-Rod and Harv Phillips.

Even though Spring Training just started the rotation looks locked up.

Jimmy Sanders, Javier Rodriguez, Nam-cheol Chong, Harvey Phillips and Nick Reed.

The pen to pitch behind those spectacular starters.

Trevor McCain, Lloyd MacBride, Arthur Smeeth, Kenneth Duncan, Jesus Hernandez, Javier Martinez, Marcos Dominguez and Wayne Poole.

Catchers, of course, Danny Kelly will be the starter, with returning Beaver C/1B Elijah Stuart platooning as backup C and 1B.

After a stellar rookie year Charlie Murdock will be returning to start at 1B and hope to build to a spectacular sophomore season.

Middle Infielders, of course, the dynamic duo of Alvin King and Marcos Mesa, those two are inseperable in and out of the ballpark, drinking before and after the games working on their double plays even on the womend they take home...

At 3B, the departure of David Paquette was tough to swallow, but Manager George Sime is confident that offseason acquisition Jason Jackson will learn the position to satisfactory standards and bring a well needed offensive boost to the Beavers.

Backup IF: Cale O'Brien will platoon around the diamond as backup for these guys but the Beavers want to carry one more util IF, who will it be, well it may look like Frits den Breejen, or Pedro Gonzales. The end of ST will tell who will get to stay with the big club.

The OF:

Not even up for discussion who is starting in 2 of the OF spots, Zach Hutchinson and Roadrunner Damien Yates.

Which leaves one starting spot up for grabs.  With the departure of Luke Pittman, the Beavers made some small minor-league trades for fringe players who fit the Beaver game, speed and contact.  Michael Jackson, Joe Henderson, Jessy Veenbrink, Jose Figueroa, Jason Newbury and Julio Mendoza all fit the profile, but only 2 will be kept for the season, again wait until the end of ST to see who!

And at DH, which has never been a strong suit for the Beavers, the team finally decided to fill that spot a priority this year, bringing in Antonio Garza. Garza may have had an off year last year but looks to rebound with his new club.

The Beavers so far are 3-2 in ST, looking to improve on that.
